Home News Vanessa Winders May 4th, 2025 – 4:23 PM David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, and Wyatt Russell in 'Thunderbolts*' Disney’s latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thunderbolts* has struck gold at the box office careening to first and the as best opening of the year so far for Disney with $78 million for its opening weekend it was unable to over take Minecraft’s $157 million current record for the year though. Thunderbolts* opened to 4,330 theaters and with positive reviews from audiences and critics it will likely see a healthy box office life. The film brought together Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan headlining with an ensemble of a ragtag team of misfits turned heroes.
Due to a understandably anticipated splash very few films sought to compete with Thunderbolts* for an opening weekend leaving many of the box office occupied by returners. Coming in 2nd, Sinners made $33 million for its third week and theaters showing the sleeper hit of the undead still has some life to it. This lead to Sinners beating out Minecraft which settled into 3rd for its fifth week with 13 million after a resurgence with a special edition of the film released by Warner Brothers in honor of the chicken jockey trend.
4th went to the Accountant 2 which opened last week and brought home a healthy $9.8 million with Until Dawn settling into 5th with $3.65 million in the first of the gaps. Another sharp decrease The Amateur came in 6th with $1.8 million for its fourth week while King of Kings come on in 7th with $1.3 million closely behind showing the Christian film still had a lot of steam left even with the passing of Easter. Heading together at the end is the surprisingly popular Warfare with $1.25 million for 8th and in 9th was Hit: The Third Case which opened in a small number of theaters still managing to carve itself a spot with $1.1 million from 590 theaters.
10th went to Guru Nanak Jahaz which was playing in only 119 theaters bringing home $685K beating The Surfer starting Nichols Cage in which played in 1085 theater saw $674K for its opening weekend. The biggest bomb of the box office from this week though goes to the delayed release of Rust which after the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injury of director-writer Joel Souza after live rounds were brought on set saw director and led actor Alec Baldwin and the film became plagued by controversy following the accident. Rust released with the blessing of Hutchins family who are listed as executive producers and will receive a portion of the film’s revenue.
Rust brought home 25,000 for a simultaneous theatrical and streaming premiere though these are only the theatrical box office numbers as the streaming are still counting. The vast majority of the streaming earnings though will be contributing to the compensation of the Hutchins family. The weekend box office is as follows 1.
