PORTLAND (WGME) – Maine Senator Angus King continues to sound the alarm over President Donald Trump's increased consolidation of power. In a speech Tuesday, King updated Margaret Chase Smith’s iconic “Declaration of Conscience" speech. Also read: Smith famously denounced Joe McCarthy in 1950, leading to the end of McCarthyism.
Now, King says he needs to do the same. The Independent Senator says it's not Trump's agenda that he is taking issue with, but rather his attempts to seize power by “ignoring the Constitution” and the rule of law. Also read: “I feel I have no choice but call out the clear implications, and dangers, of what is happening,” King said.
“To do otherwise, to keep silent, would be to compromise what I have believed about our country since my first civics class in high school and, at about the same time, when I watched my dad risk his career to fight for justice and the rule of law. And so, here I stand.” King appealed to Republicans in Congress to do their jobs and stand up to Trump.
