WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – President Donald Trump is heading south to speak at a special event, ahead of the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa commencement weekend. His trip comes as the Trump administration ramps up attacks on higher education, This includes lawsuits with several institutions with the administration is threatening to pull federal funding. The University of Alabama is welcoming President Trump to their campus to speak at spring graduations.

While university president Stuart Bell and legendary former ‘Crimson Tide’ head football coach Nick Saban are welcoming the President to campus, some 25,000 people have signed a petition saying they don’t want President Trump to come. “I would like to see them stop trying to destroy institutions” Political analyst Roland Martin is talking about the Trump administration’s threat to pull funding from colleges and universities. Also, the dozens of executive orders impacting after school programs, K-12 education, sports and the department of education’s role in higher learning.

That’s part of the reason why more than 25,000 people signed a Change.org petition saying they do not want President Trump to speak at the University of Alabama’s graduation ceremony. The changes the administration is calling for include wanting to stregthen education for the future of our economy, adding that 70% of 8th graders are not proficient in reading or math The Secretary of Education Linda McMahon said in a social media post, “That’s a clear indicator that we are not doing the best thing we can do for our students. We cannot be last in the world in education, because we are impacting our national security.

We are impacting those next, second and third generations that are coming along. It is up to us and our responsibility to make sure we are giving them the best access to education.” Later this month, President Donald Trump is set to speak at the graduation and officer commissioning at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
