Parasail says its fleet of on-demand GPUs is larger than Oracle’s entire cloud

The Landscape of AI Infrastructure

In the realm of cloud infrastructure, major players like AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud have established a stronghold. However, the founders of Parasail envision a distinct future for AI infrastructure, one that diverges significantly from this trend, and they are entrusting their company’s future to this belief.

Parasail collaborates with a multitude of providers to offer on-demand GPUs for businesses striving to develop AI models and applications. The firm claims to provide access to high-performance hardware, including Nvidia’s H100, H200, A100, and 4090 GPUs, at a significantly more affordable rate compared to the established competitors.

A Fragmented Future

Tim Harris, co-founder of Parasail and CEO of Swift Navigation, expressed his thoughts to TechCrunch, saying, “Currently, a handful of cloud vendors effectively manage the internet. However, the landscape of AI appears more fragmented.” He believes that the compute resources available for AI operation are more interchangeable and flexible, enabling a more horizontal system function—a core principle behind Parasail’s mission.

Harris emphasized their desire to prevent a future where AI is completely dominantly controlled by large hyperscalers.

The Birth of Parasail

The inception of Parasail emerged from discussions between Harris and co-founder Mike Henry a few years ago. Henry, previously the Chief Product Officer at Groq, had pondered extensively over what would be necessary to create an AI infrastructure that rivaled Nvidia. He recognized the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure being undertaken by a variety of companies and identified a horizontal market opportunity in this landscape.

Henry remarked on the pace of development in AI hardware, noting the immense challenge it posed for companies trying to stay current. “Our focus had to be on simplifying the experience for the customer,” he stated, acknowledging the difficulties they faced in keeping up with the frequency of open-source model updates.

Growing Demand Amid Competition

In 2023, Harris and Henry formalized their plans, assembled an engineering team, and began their developmental journey in early 2024. As of today, there’s a burgeoning selection of vendors eager to assist businesses in scaling their AI initiatives. This ecosystem includes major players like Nvidia and Microsoft alongside innovative startups like Together AI and Lepton AI.

Despite the competition, the Parasail founders believe they offer something unique. Henry asserts that while many vendors share a common purpose of supplying GPUs and AI infrastructure, the proprietary technology that powers Parasail’s services differentiates them, enabling seamless connectivity across various GPU sources.

The Road Ahead for Parasail

Wednesday saw the official unveiling of their platform, although Parasail is already collaborating with a variety of clients, including Elicit, Weights & Biases, and Rasa. The firm successfully secured $10 million in seed funding in 2024, backed by notable investors such as Basis Set Ventures, Threshold Ventures, Buckley Ventures, and Black Opal Ventures.

To carve out a significant share of the market, Parasail must contend with the larger hyperscalers while relying on the continuous demand growth for GPUs. While there are optimistic forecasts for this growth, caution exists as market nuances, such as Microsoft’s cancellation of certain data center contracts, suggest that the appetite for AI infrastructure may be exaggerated.

Harris remains resolute about the robustness of demand: “We witness a relentless and unyielding demand,” he affirmed. “The challenge rests with customers trying to scale AI effectively. While companies can access open-source models, the real hurdles lie in acquiring GPU resources, accessing data centers, and implementing the necessary optimizations—all of which we simplify to just a click away.”
