Former SMU football player Theodore “Teddy” Knox and Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice are facing a new lawsuit related to a multi-vehicle crash that occurred last year on U.S. Highway 75 in Dallas. Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement According to WFAA-TV in Dallas, who obtained court documents filed earlier this month in Dallas County, a woman and her son were driving home when their vehicle was struck in a chain-reaction collision allegedly caused by Rice and Knox.
The lawsuit claims the two were driving at high speeds and illegally attempted to pass traffic using the emergency lane before hitting a median, sparking a violent series of crashes involving six vehicles. The plaintiff alleges that Knox and Rice left the scene without checking on others involved. “Defendants leaving the scene of the collision was a conscious decision to ignore the welfare of those harmed by their grossly negligent conduct,” according to WFAA's report.
It also alleges that Rice later made a public statement accepting responsibility, despite failing to do so at the scene. The woman claims to have suffered physical and emotional trauma requiring medical treatment. She is seeking between $250,000 and $1 million in damages.
Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement Authorities said Rice was driving a Lamborghini leased through a Fort Worth-based company, while Knox was allegedly behind the wheel of a Corvette leased in Rice’s name. Both vehicles were reportedly traveling over 100 mph. Knox faces identical charges and was suspended from SMU’s football program. This lawsuit follows another filed in April by two individuals also injured in the crash. That case seeks at least $11 million in damages and is set for trial in June.
