OUTRAGE AS SHE LAUNCHES HER CAMPAIGN. WE HAVE BEEN THERE. CARLY BRYANT IS RUNNING FOR CONGRESS, HIGHLIGHTING HER GROWING FRUSTRATION AS A PARENT WANTING A BETTER LIFE FOR HER KIDS.
A LOT OF MORNINGS I WAKE UP ANGRY. I WAKE UP ANGRY THAT WE DON’T HAVE PAID PARENTAL LEAVE, THAT WE DON’T HAVE MEDICARE FOR ALL. I WAKE UP ANGRY ABOUT THE WAY THAT CORPORATE POLLUTERS ARE TREATING OUR PLANET.
IF ELECTED, THE HAMPDEN DEMOCRAT SAYS A TOP PRIORITY WILL BE CAPPING CHILDCARE COSTS AT 7% OF INCOME, A POLICY SHE SAYS WOULD GIVE IMMEDIATE RELIEF TO WORKING FAMILIES. WE’RE WORRIED ABOUT THE QUALITY OF LIFE AND OUR COMMUNITIES, AND WE’RE WORRIED THAT NO ONE IS LISTENING TO US AND ACTUALLY TAKING SERIOUSLY OUR CONCERNS AND WORKING TO MAKE THINGS BETTER. BRYANT SERVES ON THE HAMPDEN SELECT BOARD AND TEACHES AT HARVARD’S KENNEDY SCHOOL OF GOVERNMENT, A STATUS SHE DOES NOT THINK CONFLICTS WITH A WORKING CLASS MESSAGE.
WELL, I’M AN ADJUNCT LECTURER, SO I GET PAID $20,000 A YEAR. WONDERFUL. WELL, BRYANT STARTS AS A RELATIVE UNKNOWN.
ANALYSTS POINT OUT THAT THE FIRST CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT HAS A TRADITION OF ELEVATING CANDIDATES FROM OUTSIDE THE POLITICAL ESTABLISHMENT. 20 YEARS AGO, WE SAW CAROL SHEA-PORTER REALLY EMERGE AS A GRASSROOTS CANDIDATE. SHE WENT ON TO BECOME CONGRESSWOMAN CAROL SHEA-PORTER.
SO YOU CAN DO IT. SOMEONE STARTING FROM THE GRASSROOTS IS A GOOD PLACE TO START FROM. AND THERE’S CERTAINLY A LOT OF ENERGY RIGHT NOW FOR CANDIDATE TRYING TO DO THAT.
EVEN WITH SOME BIG NAMES ALREADY IN THIS PRIMARY. BRYANT SAYS SHE’S READY TO SHAKE THINGS UP. ABSOLUTELY.
THIS IS THE YEAR WHERE I’M GOING TO BREAK THROUGH. THERE’S A REASON I’M COMING. AND BECAUSE THEY DON’T SEE US.
THIS IS THE TIME TO MAKE PEOPLE LIKE ME AND THE PEOPLE IN MY COMMUNITY, AND PEOPLE IN COMMUNITIES LIKE MINE THAT ARE STRUGGLING, VISIBLE. "Twenty years ago, we saw Carol Shea-Porter really emerge as a grassroots candidate.
She went on to become Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter," said Neil Levesque, of the New Hampshire Institute of Politics. "So, you can do it. Someone starting from the grassroots, it's a good place to start from, and there's certainly a lot of energy right now for a candidate trying to do that.

This is the time to make people like me and the people in my community and people in communities like mine that are struggling, visible, and that needs to happen now."
