OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Former Nebraska State Sen. Brett Lindstrom is kicking off his campaign for the state’s 2nd Congressional District seat. Lindstrom shared the news Monday morning in a release to First Alert 6 — and on his campaign website.
“I’m running for Congress because I believe Nebraska needs a leader who will fight every day for our families, our values, and our future,” Lindstrom said in the release. “I will be a voice for working people, veterans, and small businesses, and for the next generation who deserve to inherit a stronger, safer America.” The seat is held by outgoing Congressman Don Bacon, who announced a week ago that he would not be seeking another term in Congress. Lindstrom thanks Representative Don Bacon for his service not only to District 2 but for his military service.
“He’s been an advocate for our veterans and Offutt Air Force Base and I too will be an advocate for the veterans and Offutt Air Force Base,” Lindstrom said. I’m proud to announce that I’m running for Congress in Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District. Nebraska is my home.
I… Posted by Brett Lindstrom on Monday, July 7, 2025 Lindstrom is the fourth to announce a run for the seat and the second Republican to do so after Omaha City Council Vice President Brinker Harding made it official last Tuesday. Harding issued a statement Monday on Lindstrom’s announcement, welcoming him to the race: “Rebecca and I want to thank Nebraskans for their record-setting support for our campaign that we launched less than one week ago. We set a fundraising record, earned key endorsements from U.S.
Senator Deb Fischer, Senator Kathleen Kauth, Mayor Jean Stothert, Governor Dave Heineman, and Hal Daub, and received grassroots support from over 120 volunteers for the July 4th celebrations. We welcome Brett to the race. There will come a time to compare our records and visions for Nebraska, and I am confident that our campaign will earn the voters’ trust at the ballot box next May and November.” Back in 2022, Lindstrom ran to be Nebraska’s governor.
He represented Dist. 18 in the Unicameral from 2015 until 2023. Prior to his time in office, he was a financial advisor.
“I’m a common sense conservative, fighting for working families, protecting retirees, future focused and working on strengthening national security and that will be our focus on this campaign and I’ll excited to get going.” Lindstrom adds he met with Bacon last week before his formal campaign announcement. “I wanted to get his insights and thoughts on what he sees moving forward in the future and things that I can take forward and accomplish and that would include the veterans hospital and that’s one of the things we’ll tackle,” Lindstrom said. Democrats Denise Powell, co-founder of Women Who Run Nebraska, and State Sen. John Cavanuagh have already announced their bids for the seat.
The election is less than a year and a half away. Democrat Mark Johnston has also filed for candidacy. Democrat Evangelos Argyrarakis has also filed to run for the Dist.
2 Congressional seat. In 2018, he attempted a run against Doug Peterson for state Attorney General. He won more than 67,000 votes in the Democratic primary but withdrew ahead of the General Election after he was arrested on allegations that he assaulted his father; he was later disbarred over the incident.
That was his third run for the office, having withdrawn from the 2014 and 2010 races. Argyrarkis also ran for the Dist. 9 Unicameral seat twice, once in 2000 and again in 2016, when he lost in the primary.
In an email to First Alert 6 last month, Argyrakis claimed to have been endorsed by former Nebraska Congressman and previous Omaha Mayor Hal Daub, a Republican. However, Harding has an endorsement quote from Daub listed on his website. — Get a first alert to breaking news delivered to your inbox.
