CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Democrats have declared victory in the Iowa House District 78 special election Tuesday night. Angel Ramirez was elected to fill the seat left by former Representative Sami Scheetz. Ramirez is the first Latina to serve in the Iowa Legislature.
She is also a Coe College graduate and leader of a nonprofit. “I am deeply honored and humbled by the trust you have placed in me,” said Ramirez. “You embraced me when I arrived as a college student, and I’ve embraced it right back.
As your new Representative, I will work tirelessly to keep Iowa a place where young people want to build their lives, where public education is properly funded, and where you can thrive. You shared your stories with me at your doorsteps, and I promise to bring your voices to the State Capitol.” Ramirez received 2,742 votes, beating her opponent, Bernie Hayes, who received 721 votes.
