Just wait, Winnipeg: Gabe Vilardi a game-time decision for Game 4 against the Blues CURRIER: Mark Carney, the sequel to Trudeau’s elite era Photo by Gavin Young / Postmedia Network Article content Liberals are fond of portraying themselves as the party that protects Canadians from the fat cats. It’s laughable, given how many of them have been leading the party for decades.
(Think Paul Martin, Bill Morneau, our one time Finance Minister who “forgot” that he owned a villa in France, and Justin Trudeau). These are men who don’t even breathe the same oxygen as the rest of us. They live in a different world.

Try refreshing your browser, or Play Video Article content The man who replaced Trudeau and who quite possibly is going to get a 4 year mandate from Canadian voters, is the fattest of all the cats.
Mark Carney is as elitist as they come. He’s not to be faulted for being accomplished. That’s to his credit.
What’s not so admirable is his record as chair of the $900 billion Brookfield Asset Management firm. In that time Brookfield avoided paying taxes by moving assets to tax havens like Jersey and Bermuda. This is standard procedure among those who head up the largest of the world’s corporations.
The common man Mark Carney is not. Under Carney, Brookfield displayed close ties to the Donald Trump sphere. There’s a reported $1.2 billion payout to Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and Brookfield’s $250 million to assist Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter.

Article content He’s also been in bed with Qatar and China in his business dealings. Will those ties be ignored if he takes over as Prime Minister? Under Carney, Brookfield put what it thinks of doing business in Canada on full display by moving its headquarters from Toronto to New York.
Carney denies he had anything to do with the move but the evidence shows he was still the chair at Brookfield when the decision was made. The fact he’s being dishonest about his role should concern voters. He has taken a disproportionate amount of credit for steering Canada through the economic crisis in 2008, claiming it was he who got the job done — it was more accurately then Finance Minister, the late Jim Flaherty and PM Stephen Harper.
Carney has also falsely claimed Canada never experienced recession. Advertisement 4 Story continues below This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Article content His posture of being “an outsider” is an insult to Canadians’ intelligence.
Prior to becoming Liberal leader he was a senior advisor to Justin Trudeau. That’s as inside as it gets. Under the Trudeau Liberals Canada’s economy has been disappointing, and that’s as charitable as we can be.
The International Monetary Fund ranked the most robust 41 economies in the world over the last 9 years and Canada comes out a fizzling 28th. We are dead last among G7 countries in GDP growth during the Trudeau years (3% growth vs 15% growth in the USA). Our debt levels are beyond anything even Trudeau’s father could have imagined.
According to the government’s own Fall Economic Statement from December, it’s anticipated the cost to service Canada’s debt by the end of this decade will be $70 billion annually. That’s just the interest we’ll be paying on the debt that this government has racked up and it will be much higher if Carney is elected, based on his campaign promises. You can buy a lot of health care, education and military equipment for that kind of coin.
But we’ll get nothing for it. Advertisement 5 Story continues below This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Article content Now we’re expected to believe that a man who has been closely tied to the Trudeau administration, Elon Musk, Jared Kushner, Donald Trump, China, and Qatar is going to make things better.
Mark Carney has two things going for him. First, he’s not Justin Trudeau. Second, he has done away with the consumer portion of the carbon tax.
However, look a little deeper. You’ll find that we’re facing four more years just like the last nine years that have failed Canadians. — Geoff Currier is a former Winnipeg broadcaster, and a guest writer for the Winnipeg Sun.
