BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. (WBNG) — Earlier today, the Democratic Caucus of the Broome County Legislature reaffirmed its commitment to the U.S. Constitution and the protection of civil and human rights. Minority leader Kim Myers said this is in response to what they said are “illegal, immoral, and unconstitutional actions” by the Trump Administration. The caucus emphasized that they’re standing with the judiciary, educational institutions, organized labor, faith leaders, and communities.
“As elected representatives, we have sworn an oath to defend the Constitution, as all elected officials have,” said Myers. “Not just in words, but in actions.“ Broome County legislator Tim Aime said the action is about more than politics; it’s about “the soul of our democracy.” The caucus is pursuing solutions to their complaints, building community partnerships and supporting public education. Broome County Republican chairman Benji Federman responded to this action, calling it an attempt to score political points.
“Hard-working folks and retirees on fixed incomes are sick of the endless protests and nationally divisive politics,” said Federman. “These protests are nothing more than an attempt to score political points and distract from Kathy Hochul’s affordability crisis as Southern Tier families and businesses pocket less money.” Federman also urged local Democrats and their disconnected allies to stop using sloppy signs and work sincerely with local Republicans to improve residents’ lives.
