Christophe Cherix Appointed as MoMA’s New Director

In an extensive search process, the Museum of Modern Art in New York has officially announced Christophe Cherix as its next director. The esteemed board of the museum reached a unanimous decision following a concentrated international search that spanned six months. Cherix’s new role will commence in September, taking over from Glenn D. Lowry, who has guided one of the world’s preeminent museums since 1995.

A Distinguished Career

Christophe Cherix brings a wealth of experience to his new position, having previously served as the curator of prints at the Musée d’Art et Histoire in Geneva as well as holding a residency at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art during his fellowship at the Center for Curatorial Leadership. He joined MoMA in 2007 and became the Robert Lehman Foundation Chief Curator of Drawings and Prints in 2013, a result of a reorganization that merged departments. His efforts have been instrumental in enhancing and expanding the museum’s renowned collection.

Priorities for the Future

Upon the announcement of his appointment, Cherix reflected on MoMA’s approaching centennial, emphasizing the importance of staff support and maintaining the institution’s relevance in contemporary culture. He stated, “MoMA has long been a leader in embracing new forms of expression, amplifying the voices of artists from around the globe, and engaging the broadest audiences onsite and online.”

Exhibition Highlights

During his impressive 18-year tenure, Cherix has overseen significant exhibitions, including the high-profile 2023 survey of Ed Ruscha titled “ED RUSCHA / NOW THEN,” which reignited interest in the artist’s work. His curatorial impact spans both American and international artists across various media, showcasing talents like Betye Saar, Adrian Piper, Marcel Broodthaers, Yoko Ono, and Jasper Johns. Cherix has also been pivotal in acquiring notable collections, such as the Merrill C. Berman Collection and the Gilbert and Lila Silverman Fluxus Collection and Archives.

Endorsed by Peers

While Cherix is already recognized as a key player in curatorial leadership, this role marks his first directorial position. MoMA board chair Marie-Josée Kravis has warmly welcomed Cherix’s appointment, praising his insightful curatorial vision, deep commitment to the museum’s collection, and calm approach to leadership. She conveyed the board’s collective excitement, stating, “We are thrilled that after a rigorous global search, the Trustees voted unanimously to appoint Christophe and that he accepted the appointment.”

Collaboration for Transition

Lowry, the longest-serving director in MoMA’s history, has worked alongside Cherix for over fifteen years and expressed his approval of the board’s decision. He stated that he is looking forward to collaborating with Cherix in the months ahead to ensure a smooth transition. “Christophe is a gifted and talented curator, and I look forward to seeing the museum evolve and thrive under his able direction,” Lowry remarked.
