FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Contact: Matt Dorsey (202) 550-6987 Washington, D.C. – Today, the National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE-IAM) sent a letter to Chairman James Comer and Ranking Member Stephen Lynch of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability demanding that the Committee reject dangerous and illegal workforce provisions buried in the 2026 Republican Budget Resolution. The letter was sent in advance of the committee’s scheduled markup of the legislation on Wednesday morning. The letter warns that proposed measures – including forced retirement contribution hikes, extortion of new hires, pension cuts for first responders, and the dismantling of federal employee health insurance – would cripple the government’s ability to serve the American people, while opening the door to widespread corruption and political coercion.
“These proposals are not just bad policy – they are an attack on democracy itself,” said NFFE National President Randy Erwin. “They would gut whistleblower protections, defund law enforcement, punish first responders, and turn federal employment into a partisan loyalty test. Congress must stand up for the American people, not tear down the very workforce that protects them and dutifully serves the country.” In the letter, NFFE-IAM calls for immediate passage of key legislative safeguards, including the Protect America’s Workforce Act (H.R.
2550), the Saving the Civil Service Act (H.R. 492 / S. 134), and the FAIR Act (H.R. 493 / S. 126), which would restore fairness, protect civil service integrity, and ensure federal employees can continue to deliver critical services without fear of political retaliation.
“Where are the good-government Republicans who once defended whistleblowers, fought for fiscal responsibility, and protected America’s standing in the world?” asked Erwin. “If Congress does not reject these shameful cuts, the American people will remember, judge the representatives who betrayed their oath, and vote accordingly.” PRINT VERSION
