Could ex-Rutgers star be NFL’s next Travis Hunter? He is ‘up for challenge,’ coach says

written by TheFeedWired

The Packers were down multiple men at cornerback on their first day of mandatory minicamp, so they looked toward a former Rutgers star to fill in the gaps. Bo Melton, who played wide receiver for four years with the Scarlet Knights and throughout the first three years of his NFL career, took reps on both sides of the ball during Green Bay’s practice on Tuesday. Wearing a white jersey reserved for offensive players, he both caught a pass from quarterback Jordan Love and tried to break up another, according to ESPN reporter Rob Demovsky.

“That was definitely confusing,” Love said. Yes that’s receiver Bo Melton playing cornerback. He’s still wearing the white offense jersey.

But both head coach Matt LaFleur and general manager Brian Gutekunst seem to think he could eventually make the transition. “We just thought that if there is somebody that can potentially do both, he would be that guy,” LaFleur said.

“I think a lot of it is just from his production on (special) teams and just his ability to make plays on teams.” The Packers “talked about this for a couple of years,” Gutekunst said, due to Melton’s “skill set and how versatile he is.” “You watch him on teams and you’re like, ‘wow, he can probably do some of that,’” Gutekunst said. “I think it’s just something we’re going to look at and see if that’s a possibility. There have been very few guys have done it in our league, but there have been a few.

And when a guy can do that, it certainly helps your football team.” LaFleur said he “presented” the move to Melton as a similar situation to Travis Hunter, who won the Heisman Trophy last season while playing on both sides of the ball for Colorado before getting picked No. 2 overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars in this spring’s draft. Melton was “up for the challenge,” LaFleur said.

“He’s a real talented player,” LaFleur said. “I just love everything about the guy, how he shows up every day ready to compete and give his best effort. Matter of fact, I showed some clips of him in the team meeting this morning, just what he does.

You can always expect great things in whatever he is doing.” If he makes the move, Melton would join his younger brother Max Melton — who completed his rookie season with the Arizona Cardinals last fall — at the position. “His brother is a pretty good player as well,” LaFleur said. Melton has had modest success thus far, racking up 309 yards and a touchdown on 24 catches as a wide receiver in his first three seasons in the NFL.

“Bo is everything we want in a football player out there as far as his ability as a receiver, on teams,” Gutekunst said. “(If) he’s able to add this to his arsenal, he’ll be really, really valuable to us.” Thank you for relying on us to provide the journalism you can trust.
