Federal funding cuts threaten Austin public health services

written by TheFeedWired

Public health services in Austin are facing significant challenges due to federal funding cuts, with local programs at risk and jobs on the line. "Programs are being closed, colleagues are losing their jobs, and on a long enough timeline, our neighbors could become sick, and even die," Ashlee Kraus, a board member of Austin Public Health, said. Protesters gathered outside Austin City Hall, chanting, "Save public services," in response to the cuts, which are part of a broader reduction in federal funding this year.

President Donald Trump stated, "In 100 days, we have delivered the most profound change in Washington in nearly 100 years." that cities, counties, and states have lost at least $12 billion in federal public health funding in 2025. Josh Blank, Research Director at the Texas Politics Project, said public health is something that most voters believe should be provided by the government.

"Public Health might not be high on the list, but ultimately, the government doesn't have a ton of discretionary spending when you look at the federal budget," he said. Texas is currently dealing with a statewide Measles outbreak and other health challenges. Brydan Summers, president of AFSCME Local 1624, highlighted the impact of the cuts, saying they are leaving a $22 million gap for Austin Public Health.

"Immunizations, refugee health services, community health education. Those are all at risk," Summers said. Health care workers and community organizations emphasized the potential consequences of the funding reductions.

"People in our community will not get the vaccination services they need if we don't have public funding to provide those services," Nicole Doggett, a nurse with Austin Public Health, said. "If you choose to make further cuts to APH, you are sending a very clear message to the people of this city that you do not care about their health, safety, or well-being," Zachary Newton, an employee at Austin Public Health, added.
