CNN’s Manu Raju pressed Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) on President Donald Trump’s headline-grabbing comments on Meet the Press over the weekend, where he said he was unsure if he has an obligation to uphold the U.S. Constitution. Raju posted the exchange to X on Wednesday morning, in which he pressed Johnson on the topic while walking through the Capitol, “Mr. Speaker, the president over this weekend in his Meet the Press interview, would not say if he would uphold the Constitution when it comes to due process with migrants.” “I’m wondering if as a constitutional expert, if you’re concerned?” Raju asked.
“I don’t think that’s exactly what he said,” Johnson replied. “He said, ‘I don’t know,’” clarified Raju. Johnson replied with a question of his own, “Is the President expected to be an expert on all of the Supreme Court cases?
I don’t think so.” “I think he’ll uphold the Constitution, as he’s demonstrated earlier,” Johnson concluded. Asked Speaker Johnson yesterday on Trump’s MTP comments on due process when he said “I don’t know” about upholding Constitution. "Is the president expected to be an expert on all Supreme Court cases on that issue?
I don't think so. I think he'll uphold the Constitution.” pic.twitter.com/ERfTLtk3KS — Manu Raju (@mkraju) May 7, 2025 NBC’s Kristen Welker pressed Trump on the case of wrongfully deported migrant Kilmar Abrego Garcia on Sunday’s edition of Meet the Press. “Your Secretary of State says everyone who’s here, citizens and non-citizens, deserve due process.
Do you agree, Mr. President?” Welker asked Trump. “I don’t know,” Trump replied, “I’m not a lawyer. I don’t know.” “Well, the Fifth Amendment says as much,” Welker explained, later asking: But even given those numbers that you’re talking about, don’t you need to uphold the Constitution of the United States as president?
“I don’t know. I have to respond by saying, again, I have brilliant lawyers that work for me, and they are going to obviously follow what the Supreme Court said. What you said is not what I heard the Supreme Court said.
They have a different interpretation,” Trump replied. Watch the clip above.
